Wine bar & eatery

Just a stone's throw from Churchtown Village and the Botanic Gardens is Arthur's of Churchtown. A wine bar, eatery and hotel with a spacious beer garden to boot. We recently had the pleasure of visiting to try a few of their small dishes on a sunny Friday evening.

The friendly atmosphere hit us straight away with the beer garden starting to fill up while the locals soaked up the sun after a week's work. This led into the bar as the interior provides a comforting, family-friendly feel. They're super dog friendly too! With pictures and busts of dogs dotted around, we're sure dogs would feel right at home here.

At the bar is a range of wines, beers and spirits in addition to cocktails and soft drinks - something for everyone! They also offer hot drinks and cakes which left us wanting to come back again for a morning visit. We were greeted by Elisa and started with a couple of drinks to start our weekend right.

We opted to sample a few small plates but the menu also includes breakfast/brunch, pizza and charcuterie boards. We could have eaten everything from small plates menu as everything sounded delicious but our sensible side won. We tried the crispy salt and pepper chicken tossed in garlic butter with Chinese dipping sauce, baked bried with chutney & toasted focaccia and the mini fish, chips and mushy peas. We were blown away by the quality of the food here and enjoyed every bite. Their chef is clearly very passionate about his work which shines through in each of his dishes.

It is easy to see why Arthur's is a local favourite. From the atmosphere to the flavours in every dish, it exceeded expectations and we can't wait to return. Although the beer garden makes it a perfect summer spot, we noticed the log burner fire which is always a sign of a cosy, winter pub so it seems to be one for all seasons!

Arthurs also have a bar & eatery in Aughton so make sure to visit there too if you're in the area.

NYC x Naples at Purely Slice

We love this addition to Birkdale Village, the shop really does have a Neapolitan / New York kind of feel to it from the design of their menu to the counter-style service where you can get a slice and a soda to take-away or enjoy a pizza sitting outside.

Fred and his team bring a fun, friendly energy which is contagious. It’s impossible not to enjoy your visit at Purely Slice. Their love for all things Italian food shines through and adds to the authenticity of the experience.

At our most recent visit, we tried a few different dishes from the menu. A heads up… things can get very messy here. Of course, we had to start with a pizza. The Dumbo has San Marzano tomato, nduja, pepperoni, chilli flakes, fior di latte mozzarella, buffalo mozzarella and hot honey. It is bursting with flavour and has a spicy kick to it. The ingredients are sourced from Italy and the pizzas are freshly made. Our faces and hands were covered in pizza sauce by the end, but isn’t that the sign of a good time?

Next up was the lasagne bites. We love lasagne at Southport Insider, but deep fried chunks of lasagne, covered in Parmesan with a tomato dip? Another level. You have to try these, when you visit.

The sandwiches at Purely Slice were unbelievable. You can build your own sandwich from a huge selection of ingredients. All of the bread is baked fresh, daily. They don’t do anything by half measures, the sandwiches are packed full and taste amazing. We also had some truffle and Parmesan fries on the side just to cap off a delicious meal.

We may have went a bit overboard with our selection and had to bring half of it home. Even just their single slices of pizza are big enough for a filling lunch!

Being able to eat al fresco is an added bonus. Purely Slice is in a perfect location to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere at Birkdale Village. You can also order pizza to The Tea Rooms just over the road if you’re there having a cocktail or two!

It’s a huge thumbs up from us for Purely Slice. Their sister shop, Purely Pizza is also open in Burscough so be sure to visit them if you’re in the area!

A collaboration between two of the best!

Last night we were invited to an exciting evening at Seasons for a taste of their new summer deli menu, in collaboration with The Workshop.

Seasons is situated in the heart of Southport on King Street, opposite Southport Market. They offer a range of food and drink, only using produce that is carefully selected from other local businesses in the area.

We were greeted by Michelle, her pride and passion shines through from the second you meet her. She has built a loyal customer base at Seasons and this contributed to the warm, welcoming atmosphere yesterday evening. The venue has a cosy, comfortable vibe, you almost feel at home enjoying a glass of red wine and a catch-up with friends there. There is also a sheltered outdoor seating area, a perfect spot to enjoy a drink outside on a Summer evening.

On arrival we had Passionfruit Bellinis… what better way to start the evening?! We then had some warm focaccia to start, deliciously baked.

The charcuterie board that followed, showcasing hand-carved meats, artisan cheeses, home-made scotch egg, salt cod croquettes, cheese & ham quiche and chutney.

On the side, we had halloumi fries with curry mayo, home-made sausage roll with fennel ketchup and piquant chorizo in red wine & honey.

For dessert, a citrusy lemon cheesecake with ginger biscuit crumb. All of this was accompanied by a carafe of Tempranillo, carefully chosen to pair with our food.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food last night. The flavours were rich and complimented each other well; the presentation of each board was perfect; and the effort from everybody involved made this a special evening.

This won’t be the last you hear of the collaboration between Seasons and The Workshop as they are planning more events soon, so keep an eye on their socials to make sure you book in for the next one!

Seasons opens at 10am every day (except Monday), we highly advise stopping by for a coffee next time you’re in town. You’ll also often hear live music here in the afternoons so grab yourself a bottle of wine and take in the atmosphere!
