Southport's New Noodle Bar

Most people know Chews Noodle Bar as a go-to takeaway spot for sizzling Asian flavors, but here’s the secret – you can actually sit in and enjoy your food fresh from the wok! And trust me, once you’ve had it served piping hot straight to your table, you’ll be back for more.

We also took some home because the portion sizes are extra generous despite being packed into the cute little boxes… it’s like Mary Poppins' bag… Similar to a Southport Insider card the Chews carton is the gift that keeps on giving!

During our recent visit, we had the pleasure of dining in where we got to experience some of their most mouth-watering dishes, fresh, hot, and bursting with flavour. Singapore Noodles – A Spicy, Aromatic Classic. If you’re craving bold, fragrant flavors, the Singapore Noodles are a must-try; wok-tossed with a colourful mix of fresh vegetables and meat, all coated in that signature curry-infused seasoning. There’s a slight heat, balanced with the natural sweetness of the sautéed onions and bell peppers, making every bite completely addictive. It’s light yet satisfying, and I could eat this every day.

Vegan Noodles – A Thoughtful, Flavorsome Option. One of the standout things about Chews is their dedication to getting it right for vegan diners. The vegan noodle option is cooked entirely separately, ensuring that no meat oils or utensils touch it. You can really taste the freshness, with crisp veggies and a deep, rich umami flavor running through the noodles. It’s not just an afterthought on the menu – it’s a dish that holds its own.

Honey & Soy Chicken Bites – Sticky, Crispy, and Impossible to Stop Eating! I’m pretty sure the chicken bites I had were the Honey & Soy ones – and wow, were they incredibly moreish. Juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and coated in a glossy, sticky glaze that hits the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Every bite had that satisfying crunch, followed by the deep, rich flavor of soy and the subtle sweetness of honey. They’re dangerously good.

Katsu Chicken Burger – A Crispy, Salty, Saucy Dream - and not just any old salt… the chef uses pink Himalayan only. You definitely need to try the Katsu Chicken Burger. It’s got a crunchy, golden-breaded chicken fillet with a rich, tangy katsu sauce that doesn’t overpower the natural flavours either. The soft, toasted bun, fresh lettuce, and the hint of pickled ginger bring everything together beautifully. Messy, delicious, and utterly satisfying.

Big News: Outdoor Seating At Chews Southport - Coming Soon! Right now, you can grab a seat inside and enjoy your meal fresh from the wok, but soon, you’ll be able to dine out front in the sunshine! Chews is planning to provide outdoor seating just in time for spring and summer, so you can slurp your noodles al fresco while soaking up the vitamin D.

Final Verdict? Get Yourself to Chews – and Sit In! Or Have A Night At Home With A Magic Carton Of Chews Food. Chews Noodle Bar is already a local favorite for takeaways, but now the secret’s out about sitting in to enjoy it at its freshest. Whether you’re into noodles, crispy chicken, or a killer katsu burger, there’s something for everyone. And if you’re vegan, rest assured – they’ve got you covered.

A haven for plant-based dining

On our recent visit to Wild Root Kitchen, a haven for plant-based dining, we had the pleasure of indulging in a delightful range of dishes showcasing the restaurant's creativity and commitment to wholesome, sustainable cuisine. Here’s a breakdown of our experience!

The Meal

  • The Wild Full Breakfast: an explosion of flavours and textures. The hearty combination of ingredients provided the perfect balance of savoury satisfaction and nourishing comfort. Scrambled tofu, smoky beans, breakfast potatoes, juicy garlic mushrooms, vine tomatoes, a moreish house hummus, spinach and delicious pesto sourdough.

  • Super Green Protein Omelette: Packed with vibrant greens and a fantastic source of plant-based protein, this omelette was light, fresh, and bursting with flavour. The sticky tamari sauteed veggies, pea-shoots and sesame seeds piled on top were beyond tasty! Yes, please.

  • Maple Banana Bread: A sweet (and very beautifully presented!) treat to round out the meal. The moist texture and subtle maple notes made it an indulgent yet wholesome choice. We were both full but just had to finish this!

  • Beetroot Latte: A visually stunning drink with earthy undertones. Its creamy consistency and unique flavour profile were a lovely accompaniment to the meal. We would order this again!

  • Orange Hot Chocolate: This comforting beverage was a highlight, with the citrus adding a zesty twist to the rich chocolate base. Loved the festive touch with the dehydrated orange slice, too.

The Shop

We couldn’t resist taking a piece of Wild Root Kitchen home with us! Their shop offers a variety of artisanal home-made products, and we picked up:

  • Kimchi: Tangy and perfectly fermented, it’s an ideal side or condiment to enhance any meal and later that evening we added it to our dinner plate.

  • Sauerkraut: Crisp and refreshing, this probiotic-rich item is a testament to their dedication to quality! We also had this later on at home.

  • Truffle & Charcoal Cashew Cheese: Creamy, indulgent and scrumptious - this dairy-free alternative was a standout purchase and an exciting addition to our fridge.

  • Champagne Casis Kombucha: This was popped open immediately upon purchasing and guzzled with appreciation! White tea blended with black and red currants, lemongrass and delicate flowers. Loved it!

The warm and welcoming atmosphere made the experience all the more enjoyable. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable and happy to guide us through their offerings and answer questions about ingredients and preparation. Moreover, it’s dog friendly too!

Wild Root Kitchen combines innovation with sustainability, offering dishes that are as delightful to the palate as they are nourishing to the body. Whether you’re dining in or picking up some of their shop's unique items, it’s a culinary experience that leaves a lasting impression. We'll certainly be back to explore more of their menu and shop items!

A taste of Sri Lanka in Southport

Akshaya only opened in September this year and already seems to be one of the most popular restaurants in Southport. They have already had success with their restaurant in Liverpool and have gotten off to a positive start here!

The photos of the interior and theming caught our attention and it was even better seeing it in person. The walls and ceilings are covered in floral decor, with blossom trees and vines throughout the dining areas. The dark, reddish-pink lighting creates a calm, laid-back atmosphere which is complimented by the comfortable booth seating around the tables. They even have a huge fish tank full of exotic plants and animals. We can’t think of another restaurant in the area that sets an atmosphere quite like Akshaya.

Akshaya is a Sri-Lankan South Indian restaurant and the menu is full of your favourite Indian dishes. They cater for dietary requirements with a range of gluten free and vegan options. In addition to the traditional Indian dishes they also serve Akshaya specials which include burgers, steak and seafood.

For starters we tried the yoghurt chat bombs. These are small and crispy, filled with purees and mixed with yoghurt, sweet and spicy sauces. We’d never tasted anything like this, the flavours literally explode in your mouth! A fun, tasty way to start our meal. We also had lamb chops, marinated in Indian spices which were equally delicious, even down to the salad and sauces - it was all amazing.

Mains consisted of one of their most popular dishes - traditional Delhi butter chicken curry with pilau rice, this comes with a creamy tomato and cashew sauce. We also tried the beef short ribs, slow cooked in a rich, aromatic gravy with traditional Indian spices, tomatoes and coconut, served with broccolini and creamy mash. On the side, we had cheese naan bread to dip in the curry. This was honestly some of the nicest food we have experienced in Southport and we cannot wait to return to try more dishes from the menu.

Akshaya really have nailed it, bringing a taste of Sri Lanka to Southport. The chefs are clearly experts, the decor adds to the culinary experience, the staff are attentive and friendly, we have nothing but positive things to say and it this is the exact type of independent business Southport needs.
